UCF is committed to providing the Central Florida community and beyond with high-quality educational experiences, groundbreaking research, and practical solutions to some of the world's most urgent issues.
At UCF, we know that the stabilization of the Earth's climate is one of those issues--and that's why UCF has a plan for sustainability and has pledged to be climate neutral by 2050 at the latest. With more than 60,000 faculty, staff, and students, UCF has the opportunity to make a significant and positive impact on the environment and on our communities- and the chance to protect that environment for future generations.
UCF's Climate Action Plan will guide the nation's third-largest university as it works to become climate neutral. The university plans to promote a sustainable campus and integrate sustainability into core aspects of the university by:
Educating students and our community members about their impact and creating valuable solutions,
Research into products, methods, technology and policies to advance sustainability.
Among the university’s longer-term goals, UCF has pledged to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by at least 17 percent by 2020 and by 42 percent by 2030. UCF will strive to reduce its energy consumption by 30 percent below 2005 levels by 2013, increase its recycling rate to 75 percent and have 40 percent of its commuters using an environmentally preferred method to commute to campus by 2020.
Students, faculty and staff members can help by reducing and reusing materials, recycling more, decreasing their energy consumption by turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use, and choosing an environmentally friendly way to get to campus. A small individual effort by everyone on campus can make a major difference in helping UCF become more energy efficient and achieving our sustainability goals.
